25년여 동안 가장 미국적인 헤비메탈을 선사한 반 헤일런(Van Halen)이 세 곡의 신곡을 포함해 총 36곡이 수록된
두 장짜리 베스트 음반을 공개했다.

지난 1998년, 익스트림(Extreme) 출신의 게리 셰론(Gary Cherone)을 보컬리스트로 맞이해 제작한 <Van Halen Ⅲ>의
참패 이후 소식이 잠잠하던 이들이 수면 위로 부상한 것이 2003년. 반 헤일런은 공식홈페이지를 통해 후두암으로
고생을 하던 기타리스트 에드워드 반 헤일런이 건강을 회복해 곧 새로운 노래를 만나게 될 것이라는 뉴스를 전달했고
1년이 지난 2004년 여름에 비록 정규 앨범은 아니지만 반 헤일런의 새로운 노래 세 곡이 선보이게 되었다.

제2의 전성기를 가져온 2대 보컬리스트 새미 해거(Sammy Hagar)와 다시 한번 의기투합한 신곡 'It's about time'과
'Up for breakfast', 그리고 'Learning to see'는 반갑지만 톡 쏘는 맛이 거세된 콜라처럼 김이 빠져있다.
계약상 워너 브라더스와의 마지막 앨범에 구색을 맞추기 위한 위장전입(?)이라는 날카로운 비판도 가능하다.

새로 선보이는 세 곡보다 지난 세월동안 팬들의 기대치를 충족시켜 준 히트넘버들이 상대적으로 더 반갑다.
라이트 핸드 주법을 처음으로 선보인 연주곡 'Eruption'이 오프닝 트랙으로 자리함으로써 반 헤일런의 업적을
부각시켰으며 그 외에도 유일한 넘버원 싱글 'Jump'를 비롯해 'Dreams', 'Top of the world', 'Love walks in',
'Can't stop lovin' you', 'Panama', 'I'll wait', 'Why can't this be love', 'When it's love', 'Poundcake' 등
1970년대부터 1990년대까지 인기차트에 등장했던 골든 레퍼토리가 당당히 수록되어 있다.

지난 1996년, 이들의 첫 번째 베스트 음반인 <The Best Of Van Halen Vol 1.>이 공개된 이후 8년 만에 선보이는
이 앨범이 반 헤일런의 새로운 시작을 알리는 신호탄이 될지, 아니면 화려한 역사를 마감하는 마지막 인사가 될지는
