모든 팝가사가 그저 가사 자체만 봐도 이해할 수 있으면 얼마나 좋으련만, 가끔은 가사만으로는 절대 감조차 잡을 수 없는 내용들이 등장합니다. 그래서 그 노래가 만들어진 계기나 가사가 담고 있는 내용과 관련있는 배경 지식이 필요한 경우가 있죠. 그 배경이란 것도 해당 아티스트의 사생활에서부터 역사적으로 중대한 사건 또는 그 곡이 만들어질 당시의 시대적 상황에 이르기까지 참 다양하기 때문에 그것을 이해하지 못한 채 우리말로 옮긴 번역은 어딘가 매끄럽지 못한 부분이 꼭 남아 있기에 가사만 가지고 무턱대고 우리말로 옮기기도 좀 겁이 나는 경우가 종종 있습니다.

서두가 이렇게 길어진 건 Crazy Horse와 재결합하여 1975년 발표한 Neil Young의 이 곡이 바로 그런 배경을 알지 못하고서는 내용을 이해할 수 없기 때문입니다. 사실 저는 중고등학교 시절 국사와 세계사 과목을 별로 안 좋아했는데, 지금 와서 생각해 보면 역사 공부는 연도와 사건 그리고 인물의 이름을 외워서 시험에 대비하기 위한 것으로만 여겼을 뿐 자연스러운 호기심의 발로로 공부한 게 아니었기 때문인 것 같습니다. 그리고 아직까지도 역사에는 별다른 흥미를 못 붙이고 있는 제가 이 곡을 이해해 보겠다는 일념 하나로 스페인 역사 공부를 그 어느 때보다 열심히 했던 것 같네요. -_-;

서두가 좀 길어졌습니다. 이곳저곳에서 자료를 구해다 읽어 본 후 곡의 내용을 역사적 사건과 연계시켜 보려고 했는데 워낙 소질없는 분야인지라 아직도 정리가 제대로 안되고 파악하지 못한 부분도 있지만, 어쨌든 이 곡의 소재가 된 인물은 옆 그림에 보이는 스페인의 정복자 Hernando Cortez (1485-1547)입니다.

스페인의 몰락한 귀족이었던 Cortez는 젊어서 쿠바로 건너가 쿠바 총독의 명을 받아 멕시코 탐험길에 오릅니다. 수백여명의 병력과 수십여척의 함선을 이끌고 유카탄 반도를 따라 멕시코에 상륙한 Cortez는 타고온 선박을 모두 불태웠다고 합니다. 돌아갈 길이 없으니 배수진을 치고 정복 아니면 죽음을 선택하겠다는 결심이었던 거죠. 그리하여 Cortez의 군대는 수적 열세에도 불구하고 원주민인 아즈텍족과 싸워 연승을 기록하며 수도 멕시코시에 입성하게 됩니다. Dreamworks사의 장편 애니메이션 에서 두 주인공이 몰래 탔던 배가 바로 Cortez의 함선이었죠.

15세기 말부터 멕시코에서 세력을 넓힌 문명은 Aztec이었습니다. palace in the sun은 그 당시 번성하던 Aztec 문명을 대표하는 상징물, 또는 Aztec의 왕이 사는 궁전을 일컫는 듯 싶습니다.

역사 기록에 의하면 해안에 도착한 Cortez 함대를 몬테주마 왕이 직접 맞이한게 아니라 사신을 보낸 걸로 되어 있습니다. 그렇다고 해서 이 곡의 가사가 역사적 사실을 왜곡하고 있다기 보다는 전체 분위기의 흐름에 중점을 두어야 할 것 같군요. Aztec에는 빛나는 피부에 수염을 기른 왕(Quetzalcoatl)께서 재림할 것이라는 전설이 있었는데 Cortez가 바로 그 전설의 주인공으로 여겨졌다고 합니다. 그래서 멕시코를 정복하러 온 그를 오히려 환대 한거죠. 여기에서 coca를 대접했다는 언급은 바닐라와 향신료를 가미한 chocolatl이라는 음료를 지칭할 겁니다. 쵸콜렛의 기원을 살펴보면 최초의 기록으로 남아 있는 때가 바로 Cortez가 Montezuma 왕의 궁전을 방문했던 시기거든요.

가사의 후반부에 와서는 뜬금없이 여인과 사랑을 언급하고 있습니다. Neil Young이 단순히 역사적 인물이나 사건을 우리에게 환기 시키기 위해 이 곡을 쓴 건 아닐 겁니다. 그가 이 곡에 대해 언급한 "Romance is a quest, and this connection is the key to an appreciation of the song's power"라는 말을 참고해 보면 그가 이 곡을 통해 진정 전하고자 했던 의미를 얼핏이나마 이해할 수 있을 겁니다. 앨범 의 전체 맥락도 사랑이라는 주제에서 크게 벗어나지 않습니다.

이 곡이 Montezuma왕의 환대에도 불구하고 Aztec 문명을 무참히 파괴했던 Cortez를 비난할 목적으로 만들어진 건 아니겠지만 어쨌든 그를 killer로 칭하고 있습니다. Neil Young의 작품 중 가장 긴 연주를 담고 있는 이 곡이 그러한 내용상의 문제로 1975년 발매 당시 스페인에서는 금지곡이 되었습니다.
