사슬 없는 마음의 영원한 정신! 자유여,
그대는 지하 감옥에서 가장 찬연히 빛난다.
그대 사는 곳은 사람의 마음 속이기에
그대를 묶어 놓는 것은 그댈 사랑하는 마음 뿐,
그대 아들들이 족쇄에 채워져 얽매일 때-
그리고 축축한 지하 감옥 햇빛 없는
어둠 속에 던져질 때,

그들의 조국은 그들의 순교로 승리를 얻고
자유의 명성은 그 날개를 널리 펼친다.
시용이여! 그대의 감옥은 오히려 성스러운 곳
그대의 슬픈 돌바닥은 제단이다.
보니바르가 한 때 그 차디찬 돌바닥이 잔디인 양
그의 발자국이 그 모두에 남을 때까지
그 돌바닥을 짓밟고 거닐었기에
아무도 그 발자국들을 지우지 말지어다!
그 발자국들이 폭정을 신에게 호소하는
증거가 되기에.

바이런  -1788~1824   영국의 시인
런던에서 태어났다. 1798년 제5대 바이런남작이 죽음으로써 제6대를 상속하여, 조상 대대로 내려오는 노팅엄셔의 뉴스 테드애비의 영주가 되었다. 1805년 케임브리지대학의 트리니티 칼리지에 들어갔고, 시집《게으른 나날》을 펴냈다.
그는 슬프고 애절한 서정성, 날카로운 풍자성이 있는 시들로 근대 유럽 문학의 발전에 공헌하였고, 낭만파 시인의 대표로 꼽힌다.《차일드 해럴드의 편력》이 예기치 않은  성공을 거두었는데, 그 때 “자고나니 유명해졌다.”는 유명한 말을 남겼다.
