어스름에 나직이 한 여인이
내게 노래를 불러 주면
나는 지난날의 추억(追憶)을 더듬어
쇠줄 퉁기는 소리 가운데
한 아이가 피아노 밑에 앉아 노래하면서
웃음 짓는 어머니의 작은 균형 잡힌 발을
누르는 것이 보인다.

나도 모르는 새에,
짓궂게도 교묘한 노래 솜씨는
내게 옛날을 생각하게 하여,
드디어 내 마음은,
밖은 겨울인 아늑한 응접실에서
퉁기는 피아노에 맞춰 찬송가를 부르던

D. H. Lawrence  -1885~1930  영국의 소설가· 시인· 비평가

노팅엄셔 주의 탄광촌 이스트우드에서 태어났다.
부모의 잦은 다툼 속에서 사춘기를 보낸 그는 그 뒤 그의 작품에 이러한 불만을 담았다.
노팅엄 대학을 졸업한 뒤, 1909년부터 3년 동안 런던 교외 크로이든의 초등학교 교사를 지냈으며, 1912년 대학시절의 스승 위클리의 부인이며 6세나 연상인 프리다와 사랑에 빠져 독일·이탈리아 등을 떠돌았는데,<아들과 연인>은 이때에 쓴 것이다.
말년에 완성한 <채털리 부인의 사랑>은 외설시비로 오랜 재판을 겪은 뒤에야 출판할 수 있었는데, 그는 작품을 통하여 본능을 만족시켜야만 참된 인간적 조화를 이룰 수 있다는 것을 주장하였다.
그 밖의 작품으로는<무지개><사랑하는 여인들>등이 있다.
