Genesis의 리드 보컬리스트로 활동하던 Peter Gabriel이 밴드를 탈퇴하고 솔로로 전향한 뒤 1977년 발표한 솔로 데뷔작입니다. 이 앨범에 그의 대표곡이자 영국차트 20위까지 올랐던 'Solsbury Hill'이 수록되어 있죠. 이 곡은 1990년에 나온 베스트 앨범에 실린 곡으로 처음 들었는데 나중에 원래 앨범에 실린 오리지날 곡을 들어 봤더니 베스트 앨범 버전과는 전혀 다른 분위기네요.

Peter Gabriel은 반핵 캠페인에도 참가했었고 정치법과 사회범 구제를 위한 Amnesty International에서도 활동하며 넬슨 만델라 지지 콘서트에 출연하는 등 뮤지션을 넘어 사상가 및 운동가로도 그 입지를 넓힌 인물인데 그러한 그의 생각이 가사에 스며들지 않을 수 없겠죠.

가사를 읽어 나가다 보면 제 경우에는 타락한 세상의 비극적 종말을 묘사한게 아닌가 하는 생각이 듭니다. 첫 단락은 범죄나 다툼의 만연함을, 두 번째 단락부터는 그런 세상에서 방향을 잃고 헤매는 모습을 묘사한 듯 하고, 하늘로 쏘아 올린 금속과 내리는 비는 핵전쟁을 연상시키는군요. 나름대로 가사의 의미를 되새겨 보는 것도 좋을 것 같습니다
